You know how there’s a freshmen 15 everyone talks about? Those 15 pounds you gain in your first year of college, that you then desperately try to lose for the rest of your time there. Well I think it’s time to introduce the relationship equivalent of that – the relationship 15. We all know it happens, but we don’t seem to notice until it’s too late. It’s as if those 15 pounds just sneak up on us and we’re completely shocked by the whole situation. Let’s talk about the reasons we gain weight when we’re in a relationship.
1. Dates Revolve Around Food
A dinner and a movie has become a staple date scenario. And that wouldn’t be so bad, but these days we rarely limit ourselves to just a dinner. There’s always a fatty cappuccino with whipped cream to go, a dessert after dinner, a huge popcorn and a coke at the movies, and those calories just keep piling up. It doesn’t help that portions in cages and restaurants keep getting bigger and that all the sauces are making even the healthiest salads worth a big mac meal calorie wise. And the more dates you go on, the more you eat, so it’s a no-brainer.
2. Your Partner Might Be A Negative Influence
It’s extremely unfair, but men generally have a faster metabolism, so they can eat more and not gain weight. Once you’re in a relationship with one, you tend to eat the same things and share meals. Sooner or later your boyfriend will convince you that having a pizza or Chinese for dinner a couple of times a week is absolutely fine and then say hello to relationship 15. It’s amazing how fast a pizza can transform itself into a couple of pounds of fat on your tummy or your butt.
3. You Skip Gym To Be With Your Partner
Our lives are getting busier by the minute and it’s really hard to find time for everything. If you have a full time job and you have to commute to your office – that’s already most of your day gone. Add gym sessions and suddenly even scheduling a meet-up with a friend becomes difficult. Now add a boyfriend to this and suddenly you don’t have time for anything. A lot of people choose to skip the gym in order to spend time with their partner, and unless your dates involve cycling, mountain climbing or intense HIIT workouts together, there’s no way you’ll use up all the calories you had at the dinner date.
4. You No Longer Need To Try Hard
Once you’re in a relationship and it’s going well, it’s easy to just forget and let go. Your partner likes the way you look, they don’t notice the weight gain so why worry, right? Plus, you’re not attracted to anyone else, so you don’t need to constantly keep yourself in perfect shape. After all, your partner loves you just the way you are.
6. You’re Happy And Don’t Care
At the end of the day, if you’re happy in your relationship you don’t care about being in perfect shape. You also don’t care if your partner is in perfect shape. You both like each other the way you are and you’re just enjoying your life together. The compliments keep coming and if your partner doesn’t mind that you have some junk in your trunk – enjoy yourself. You know how they say that nothing tastes as good as skinny feels? Well perhaps those people never went out for ice-cream with their partner. Because both the delicious food and the love of a caring partner feel pretty freaking great.
